MERMAID · LEGAL
Privacy Policy
Effective August 18, 2026
Mermaid is designed to provide coastal conditions without requiring an account, advertising profile, or precise device location.
1. Scope
This Privacy Policy explains how Mermaid – Wind, Surf & Tides ("Mermaid", "we", "us", or "our") handles information when you use the Mermaid mobile application, website, and related services.
Mermaid is a weather, marine-conditions, tide, fishing-outlook, beach-shelter, and ferry-information service. It is not an emergency, navigation, or safety service.
2. Privacy at a glance
Mermaid does not require user accounts and does not include advertising, cross-app tracking, or analytics SDKs. The app does not request access to your device’s precise location, contacts, photos, camera, or microphone.
No account or profile is created.
No advertising identifiers are collected or used.
No precise device location is requested.
Selected places, favourites, and downloaded forecast/map data are stored locally on your device or browser.
4. How information is used
Information is used only to operate Mermaid, remember your choices, retrieve and display coastal data, diagnose service problems, protect the service, and comply with applicable law.
5. Data providers and services
Mermaid retrieves public data and media from third-party services including Open-Meteo, Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Canadian Hydrographic Service, Environment and Climate Change Canada, NOAA National Data Buoy Center, BC Ferries, the BC Data Catalogue, AISStream, Esri World Imagery, EOX Sentinel-2 Cloudless, Amazon Web Services Open Data terrain tiles, and OpenStreetMap services.
Requests to these providers are governed by their own privacy policies and terms. Mermaid may also use hosting and content-delivery infrastructure to serve the website and limited buoy- and ferry-data endpoints.
6. Selling and sharing
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for behavioural advertising, and Mermaid does not display third-party advertising.
Information may be disclosed when reasonably necessary to operate the service, comply with law, protect rights or safety, investigate abuse, or complete a business transfer subject to appropriate safeguards.
7. Retention, deletion, and choices
Local preferences and cached data remain on your device until the app, browser data, or cache is cleared. On iOS or Android, uninstalling Mermaid removes app-local data according to the operating system’s normal behaviour. On the web, you can clear site data in your browser settings.
Because Mermaid does not create accounts, there is normally no user profile held by us to access or delete.
8. Children
Mermaid is a general-audience coastal information service and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and Mermaid does not provide accounts or an in-app channel for submitting personal information.
9. Security and international processing
We use reasonable safeguards appropriate to a service of this nature, but no network transmission or storage system is completely secure. Third-party data services may process technical network information in Canada, the United States, Europe, or other jurisdictions where they operate.
10. Changes
We may update this policy when Mermaid’s features, providers, or legal obligations change. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when material changes are published.
